Ohhh.... the magical patina of rust! Doesn't this wind chime look like it's 1000 years old?
Rust looks great anywhere.
And on nearly any thing. :)
There is something amazingly organic about natural rust that comes from weather and time. I simply like it because it's a natural aging element that doesn't add colour, but more, patina and texture. Did you know if you put a clear on rust, it takes away the orange tone and deepens it? Very cool.
This old bed frame that use to be white is now wearing the perfect rust patina one couldn't recreate if they tried.
Or... could they?
My artist friend Dan is a lover of all things rust as I am. Maybe even more so if that's possible. And some of his creations are amazing examples of what else you can do with this patina. And it doesn't have to look like junk. :) Here's a peek at some major upscale rust for you to drool over. :)
These are double bay type doors leading into Dan's workshop.
They are fabricated out of layers of heavy sheet metal, trimmed out with rivets, and framed with an intricate plasma cut design around the perimeter.
All wearing a wonderful 100% rust patina. NICE.
The caption on the plasma cut puzzle lock reads 'Let Imagination Loose.' Would you say he resembles that remark?
Let's also have a look at the main office door.
On layers of metal, the tree was created by simply running beads of welding over top one another, creating a sculpted tree trunk. The leaves were all separately plasma cut out of metal and welded into place. And if something wasn't rusty to begin with, a treatment was used to make it so. (I'll do a tutorial on that subject one day)
(the exterior painted parts of the building are all hand carved into fiberglass reinforced concrete)
Dan earns a living designing and building themed environments and 3D signs such as what you'd see at a theme park, so it's no surprise that there isn't a whole lot of normalicy to his creations. Everything made with his hands (or those of his helpers) is one of a kind. See what I have to keep up with here? :)
Many of Dan's other creations, from front entrance gates to dragons, all wear this amazing rust patina. And this is only a very small part of what he does. You can check out his amazing website HERE.
Incidentally, I worked with Dan part time for about a year. He's the one responsible for the tool knowledge that I have thus far...
... and for the mac computer system he encouraged me to get.
And help me set up. (like he had a choice!) :) That story is coming up very soon! Thanks Dan. :) Keep rustin, bro! Just not my computer.
