Dress Up A Fence With Painted Bird Houses

Isabella and Max love working on a fun project. So they were excited when I mentioned we should pick up several bird houses to paint and hang along the fence in the backyard. It's a great little activity for a warm summer afternoon, fast and inexpensive with an end result that is pretty cute.

We began by finding a Michael's coupon and headed off to the store. We found a nice selection of bird houses for nearly nothing, and spotted the little ones on sale for a mere .49 cents!

First the bird houses were painted with a coat of primer. This will help them stand up to the elements.

After the primer dried, out came our collection of acrylic paints and brushes, and the painting began.

All of the houses were worked on at the same time, painting one section and moving on to another house as that area dried. The bottoms were also painted as they will be seen when placed along the fence.

This kept Isabella and Max occupied for a hours. (Well, Isabella hours, Max an hour.) If you are a mom at home with kids for the summer, you know the beauty of this!!

Later today we will find a spot on the fence to hang them. I'll post those pictures tomorrow and will also show you how Max stopped being so meticulous soon after this picture was taken. His finished bird house is...interesting!
