Revisiting The Master Bedroom & Upcoming Changes

The Master Bedroom was the first room to be completed when we moved into our house nearly two years ago. While it is tempting to work on the "public" rooms of your home first, it is also very important to create your personal sanctuary, a place to retreat to at the end of a long day.

In my case this was quite easy. For the most part I simply moved the furniture and bedding from the master bedroom in our previous home into this room, painted and added a few new accessories.

But for awhile now I've been wanting to shake up this room a bit, make it lighter and add more color. Not an earth shattering necessity, I realize, but then I was given a few reasons to move forward with a redesign. First, one of the lamps broke recently when I bummed the clock. It fell into the lamp, breaking the glass balls. Next, Max crawled into bed one night with, of all things, silly putty grasped in his hand. If you don't already know this...that stuff stains and there is no getting it out. The sheets and duvet in their current state are proof of this. If these small problems were not enough to warrant a redesign, another incentive has come along! More about that in the next couple of days. But in the meantime, before the room is taken in another direction, let me share a few additional photos of the room and let's give this room a proper send off!

As the bedroom is quite small and faces a shaded backyard, it tends to be a dark room. My original design for the space embraced these qualities, creating a soothing room of muted tones, with a little silk and crystal thrown in to add a bit of shimmer.

For example, the silk shantung drapes and crystals hanging from a vintage pagoda chandelier, found at a local store. (The fixture was brought into this room from the Vintage Modern Powder Bathroom in my previous home.)

The ceiling is painted SW Dapper Tan, which is a few shades darker than the SW Universal Khaki walls. I love the how the lights of the chandelier glow against the ceiling. This reflection certainly wouldn't be as dramatic against a ceiling painted white.

The glass lamp bases and candle holders add addition luster, while my favorite element in the room has to be the hand painted criss cross texture on the wall behind the headboard. It was intended to resemble a tweed fabric, with the idea of bringing a masculine element into the room.

The Colette bedframe, with its pewter nail head trim, is from Crate & Barrel.

Finally, an ivory shag rug was layered over the darker carpet, bringing in wonderful texture and a large light element to prevent the room from becoming too dark.

While I've enjoyed this retreat tremendously, I am very excited about the new direction I have in store for the room. There are several new DIY projects planned and I've selected a few fabulous new fabrics and colors to work with as the starting point. Stay tuned...
