In the previous post, holes in the knotty alder cabinetry had been filled and seams on the door profiles were filled with caulk. After this dried, the cabinetry was sanded and then painted with a layer of primer.
The primer was sprayed on. I think it is the only way to go, if a smooth finish on the cabinetry is desired. And yes, I'm fortunate to have my favorite painters doing the work for me...
That was yesterday, this is today. The deep holes were filled a second time this morning. As the product tends to shrink as it dries, deeper areas need to be filled a second time to create a flush surface.
Also, checking in on the progress I had a slight concern. The mitered corners on the door fronts had small gaps where the corners met, along with other small areas that needed further attention before the paint could be applied.
I needn't have worried. After the filler applied in the morning dried, this is what happened in the afternoon. (The painters have another job a few houses away, so just stop in when it's time for the next step!)
A bondo filler was applied at the problem areas. If this isn't done, particularly at the mitered corners, it will become quite noticeable as the paint seeps down into the cracks.
If I hadn't gone through this process before, these scenes would cause me a large dose of anxiety. But I know where it is going, so can relax and trust the workmanship of the painters. However, when having work done it is always good to oversee the project and check in at each step, asking questions if you have any concerns about the work.
Once the bondo sets, the surface will be lightly sanded and finally painted. I should have photos of the painted island on Monday!
