Where's my new post on the blog roll?!? How to fix...

Hmmm... I made a really large post last night and noticed it didn't load on the blog roll.

So I tried posting it again. No luck.

So I drafted both to see if the post itself was holding back the load.

I've done this before. I had been happily blogging away for a good week when I noticed that my posts weren't loading in the blogroll. I googled until the ends of the earth to try and figure out why. There were no answers except one. Someone wrote it could be due to corrupt html within that post.

So I promptly went back to the original post where the loads stalled. Cut and pasted the html code, loaded it onto my test blog, and deleted the original.

BAM! The blogroll immediately flooded a week's worth of posts into the blog roll.

So here we go again. Same issue. No loading. But this time I simply put the posts in draft mode to see if it works.

So, this is a test. I'm going to hit publish and see if this one loads. If it does, drafting a problematic post is the way to go. If it doesn't, I'm going to remove it from the blog and report back.

I shall be back with more answers... unless you know them. And if you do, please share!

UPDATE

Redrafting the last post that didn't go up on the blogroll worked! YES!!!

So there you have it. Redraft the last post that didn't load.  The rest just may.

How to redraft a published post

Go back into your published post like you're going to edit it.

Select DRAFT.

Your post will be taken offline and left in draft mode.

31 Days / day 7 - all about sidebar sponsors

Sidebar sponsors are becoming the norm on most blog sidebars these days. Not long ago we were busy apologizing for their mere presence, remember?!?

Times have changed. Bloggers are finally realizing their social media flare is worth something and sidebar advertising has become the norm.

Whether one likes the 'look' or not, it's about business. If you're visiting a blog with lots of sponsors, consider the fact that they are paying for your free viewing privilege.

Welcoming sidebar advertising is a personal choice with no right or wrong. If you prefer a carefree clean blog or blog for pure hobby reasons, perfect! However if you're wishing to slowly flip your passion into an income, sidebar sponsors may be right for you.

I'm personally extremely appreciative of those that wish to help support FJI! They are all a wonderful bunch of small businesses that have heart and personality. I couldn't ask for a nicer group to do biz with. :)

What are sidebar sponsors?

Sidebar sponsors are small businesses that pay for exposure on the face of blogs.  They sit on the sidebar for a predetermined time frame that is established between the sponsor and host.

Most hosts do much more than take their funds and let them just look pretty though. :) So consider the following facts before jumping in head first. Sidebar sponsors flip your casual blogging habit from hobby to career with business expectations attached.

How much should a blog charge?

Costs for a sidebar sponsor is very individual. However a rule of thumb I generally go by is: if one has 6000 followers, approx $60 a month is reasonable. 4000 followers = $40/mo, etc.  I don't count the subscribers because they don't see the buttons on the sidebar when viewing from a reader. I also offer a cut rate for 3 months at a time because it's less bookkeeping for me, therefore feel I can extend the time savings back to them.

An amount can also be based on how high the volume is on that given blog. Or how often new content is posted. Or any little extras you practice. It's all up to you!

When is a good time to add sponsors?

I believe I started offering this service when I had a couple thousand followers. Before that, I didn't find it all that feasible for the work involved. You really do have to consider the time it takes to add/remove buttons and host reviews and giveaway events and occasional promotion.

Expectations

Frequent posting is better exposure for your sponsors. For this reason I generally post every other day with exception to this 31 Day series. Just know, you should be posting regularly to be fair to your sponsors. If you take a blog break, let them know and either offer a refund or extend their term.

Having a weekly link party is also extra exposure, so make sure they're aware of it!

I will also casually mention my sponsors in regular blog posts with a link back for added exposure where it suits.

Reviews

Offering a review and or giveaway event is actually beneficial to all. It's a wonderful highlight for the sponsor, a chance to hear about a fun new product for you, and a chance to land it for free too. :)

Being a BlogHer hosted blog,  I cannot accept payment for reviews, however I can exchange the item for the service. If you do this, ensure the item you're exchanging is valued appropriately vs. your required time. Reviews that involve you making a project take even more time so adjust accordingly.

Giveaways

I always like to suggest a giveaway be in conjunction with a review so you have an audience that is responsive and involved. I have a $50 value rule so the response is good. But know, the higher the value, the better the response. It simply generates more buzz.

An additional rule I have is that a Canadian can be a potential winner (because I'm Canadian!). Bad for biz if I can't support my own country. :) Sadly, most sponsors are not willing to gamble that a non American may win. So be sure to mention during your giveaway event who's entitled to win because blogging is worldwide.

Consider what your sponsor is gaining from this event. I send participants to their blog in order to qualify for a possible win. It may bring in less comments, but a giveaway is really about promotion, not the freebie. Sponsors would rather have less comments and more traffic!

I also like to offer another opportunity for a win if they LIKE their Facebook page or some other such thing. Be creative. Dream up ideas on what can benefit your SPONSOR the most and they'll be back for another month of advertising because you pulled out all the stops. :)

How to work with sponsor buttons

A sponsor button can either be a jpg or html. If the button comes as a jpg, I upload it into my photobucket account so I can generate an html myself. Then I simply install the button in an html widget through dashboard, resize, and link it up to the desired Etsy or website. I like html's because they are easy to resize and center.

To center an html:    < center > the button html goes here < /center >   (with no spaces!)

I personally don't use the side by side sponsor columns but most do. Google 'sponsor button codes' and you'll be sure to land a code that works.

Most sponsor buttons should be no smaller than 125 x 125 and it's best if they are done in a square shape with an outline to work on all backgrounds.

Good ideas

Charge to host giveaways and reviews.

If there's income involved on one side, it ought to be two sided. Your time is worth something! At the very least, exchange a worthwhile dollar value of goods for your service so you are comfortably compensated. Offer things free and you undercut what everyone is working so hard to establish.

Keep the advertising on the blog in good balance with your usual content.

Your viewers are there to see you first, so refrain from becoming a TV commercial and promote sparingly. My motto is no more than once a week unless you're doing a big promotion with many involved. The perfect scenario?  Create a project WITH the item you're reviewing/giving away so you're still feeding your niche market.

Social media highlights

Facebook

Once a week I go through a sponsor's store and pick something I adore and highlight it on Facebook. It's always so fun to view the comments that are soon to follow! Many highlights can have a product selling out so I do my best to ensure there's enough in stock prior.

Twitter

Twitter is all about promotion, so advertising is expected there more so than anywhere else. Go for it, but resist the urge to auto RT or spam at a high rate, otherwise you may lose followers.

Keep your sidebars neat, tidy and aligned properly so it's an attractive spot to shop in. Remove anything that doesn't need to be there to reclaim some clean space.

Bring up your sponsors periodically in a subtle manner through blog posts from time to time for ongoing support.

Consider tracking the promotion progress.

You can activate a code to help track how effective the ad or event was for promotional purposes. This can be done in the program bitly - place in the long url, auto shorten, then use that shortened code for the new url. bitly will continue to track the hits for you! It's totally BRILLIANT.

Create an ADVERTISE page

The more info you offer, the less they will email you repeatedly for questions. I offer all my info publicly so only those ready to purchase will contact me. Click HERE how I lay out my own terms. Just make sure you provide enough info so your sponsor can be an informed shopper.

I'll also be covering the wonderful world of advertising campaigns, so stay tuned!

Disclaimer: many of these statements above are of my own opinion and are mere suggestions.

If you appreciate visiting my blog, please take a moment to click on those that help support me to be here as much as I am. They really are making this possible. :)

How to make your blog comment friendly

This is not a new post.  But it's a good one, especially for blog newbies.

When I first ran this post, commenting on other's blogs changed DRAMATICALLY. Gone were the word verifications and emails were finally linked up to comments. It was like magic.

To date, the original post, shown Nov 2010  has received 167 comments. You can read them HERE.

So this one's for the newbies. Welcome and happy reading!

And tweaking. :)

Has the presence of word verification ever stopped you from commenting on another's blog?

How about the good ol' noreply when you email another?
As a weekend host of a fairly large linkup event, I visit a lot of blogs. It's been really fun getting to know more and more of you!

However, some visits require jumping through hoops to get my comment of gratitude to you. Or even an email. And most of you aren't even aware of it.

Let's look at it this way.  Have you ever answered your door to a guest, only to immediately hand them a dish cloth, requesting they do your dishes before you can visit? Silly scenario, isn't it? Well, some blog default settings sort of do the same thing to your blog visitors. The settings make your guests work in order to leave a comment.

The problem?

Default settings

When you start a new blog, there are default settings in place. With a few minor tweaks, your blog can immediately become more visitor friendly!

Having our visitors feel welcome is critical for blog success. And making it easy to leave comments and emails back to all is even more imperative if you wish for those comments. Trust me, I use to use all these safety gadgets in my earlier days of blogging. But today, I've found better ways around the issues. So, allow me to help your blog become more visitor friendly this very instant!

Word verification
What it does:

When a visitor makes a comment, a funky or sometimes scrambled word comes up, where they must type it out in order to have the comment go through. This keeps spammers from leaving comments on your blog.

Lecture

This is not only a spam deterrent, it can also be a comment deterrent. :) At times, it's a 3 step process to leave a comment. First you comment, then do word verification, then sometimes a third to verify. (I don't know why this is!)  I miss the 3rd step nearly every time, as I have to manually scroll to read whether the comment took or not.  And if I don't verify, my comment will not be there. Which happens to LOTS of my comments. And I don't go back to enter again.

So what about the spam issue then? Some of us will get hit, and then you have a reason to put it back on. However there ARE other ways to deal with the spam. I use email notification to keep track of where it goes. And with the new blogger templates, there's now an auto spam filter that catches most of it.

So, I vote remove word verification TODAY and let's ease the pain of 2 or 3 clicks it takes to leave a comment on your blog.

99% of you don't know you have it activated. Guaranteed. :) Check it out.

How to deactivate (or activate) word verification

dashboard
settings
comments
scroll down to: Show word verification for comments?
please select NO. :)
click save settings

Comment notification

What it does:

Every time someone comments on your blog, you'll get an email which makes it soooo easy to reply back to your visitors! (IF they have comment notification enabled as well)

Lecture

You know how much work it is to hunt for someone's blog in order to find their email to comment back. This makes it a breeze! Just do it and thank me later. This is also how I gauge spam.

How to activate comment notification

dashboard
settings
comments
scroll down to: Comment Notification Email
fill in your email
click save settings

Comment moderation

What it does:

When someone comments, you have a chance to moderate the comment before allowing it to be published on your blog. The comment will not appear until it is approved by the blog owner.

Lecture

I honestly LIKE seeing my comment publish right away on your blog. I like to check for spelling errors and if I sounded like a dork or not and may wish to redo it. :)

Ask yourself why you're still moderating comments. 99.9% of them are super nice! And now you have comment notification on so you'd get an email on where to locate it in order to delete it if desired anyway. Same with spam. So go ahead. Live dangerously. Deactivate this one. It'll save you work and offer your guests instant gratification.

How to activate/deactivate comment moderation

dashboard
settings
comments
scroll down to: Comment moderation
select NEVER ... I mean, if you want :)

click save settings

 Activate your profile / email

What it does

If your profile is activated, this provides a means in which we can #1 email you IF you activate email, and #2 - you'll show up in other's email notifications. Which is truly what you want. Trust me.

Lecture

Let's say you leave me a comment and I want to write you back. If I need to go hunt down your blog (which one, anyway? many of you have more than one), then leave a comment on some non applicable post in order to reach you, chances are I won't do it.

How do I KNOW you don't have your email or profile activated? Because when I go try and email you, your email address shows up as noreply. Which really means NO REPLY. Which means I can send it but it won't get to you.

Leery on having a profile for security reasons? Leave your profile blank but at least activate a new hotmail email account you can later delete if going public isn't working for you. However, if you're public with a blog, you really ought to go public with an email. It's good PR for your visitors.

How to activate your profile and email

#1. CREATE a profile if you don't have one already. This is somewhere in your initial blog settings.

#2. Once created, you need to activate it.

dashboard
look to the upper left
select edit profile

under privacy -
select - show my profile
select - show my email address

under identity -
ADD - your desired online email address

click save profile

Embedding comments under post

What it does

If embedding is chosen, your comments will show up underneath your blog post in one long scrolling page after you click your home page. No popup boxes or separate pages applicable.

Lecture

Ever wish to comment but wish you could scroll up to take a gander at the post while you do so? My comments are MUCH shorter if I must rely on the memory of what your post just showed me.

But this option does more. When someone clicks on your post, they don't have to select COMMENT in order to make one. The comment window is just there and open and ready for you.

I also don't care for the little popup box that jumps up at me when commenting. #1, they're too small and I feel like I'm typing inside a postage stamp and I must manually grab and enlarge it if I want it bigger, and #2, if I click on your post to scroll, the comment box disappears. Just not as user friendly as embedding.

How to activate embedding comments under post

dashboard
settings
comments
scroll down to: Comment Form Placement
select Embedded below post
click save settings

then sign out of your blog, and go and try and comment to make sure it works.

 Contact Me Button

What it does

A properly functioning contact button on your blogface allows visitors to email you through one click. The feature automatically opens up their email account so it cuts down on additional steps.

Lecture

I personally don't love them because it opens up a weird more simplified email box area on my mac. However it's alot easier than cutting and pasting someone's email into your own email which requires extra steps. This is quick and easy.

Tip: if you right click a contact me button done right, it'll give you the option to simply COPY the email address if you so desire which is very handy!

How to create a Contact Me button

1. Choose your blog button (picture) of choice.

(creating blog buttons needs to be in a post by itself... one day I shall)

2. Upload your image to any image hosting website.

(I use Photobucket)

Once uploaded, html codes of all kinds will be attributed to your image. Keep all those fancy codes handy. You'll need the image one. (starting with http and ending with jpg, png or whatever)

3. Go back to blogger, and go to

dashboard,
design,
page elements,
add a gadget,
scroll down to the 6th that reads HTML

4. Enter this code as is except for tweaking in your own applicable info:

red - your email
teal - your image code
magenta - center coding

You won't be able to cut and paste the above code as it's displayed as a 'picture'. There's a lot of work and learning in making codes show up in blog posts correctly, so for now click HERE  where you can cut and paste the code from. It works! Just remember to replace the applicable info with YOUR email and YOUR image info.

Want the button to center? Add the center info before and behind the code (as above) like I did which wasn't included in that website.

5. Save changes, position where you desire and you're done! Test it out to ensure it's working.

Music

What it does

Some blogs have added a playlist of music. When you enter a blog, you're either greeted to music automatically (which you can deactivate by FINDING it first) or you have the option to activate the play yourself.

Lecture

What it REALLY does is scare the daylights outta me when I late night blog hop. :)

Other than that, this feature slows down dial up computers, causes my high speed connection to slow down and run glitchy, and encourages me to exit quicker than I may have originally wished to.  Where it's true you can mute,  I don't want to each time music hits me at random. I vote to at the very least, disable it and leave it as an option for visitors, not a mandatory feature. Or leave it off altogether. Your visitors really don't like it even if you do. :)

Commenting back

What it does

When someone comments on your blog, many of us love to comment back as a blog courtesy.

Lecture

I get emailed a fair bit asking what I personally do. And then I email others and ask what they do. 'Round and round we go!

In a nutshell, you need to do what's right for you.

Are you wishing you had the time to comment back to each comment you get? Me too. There was a day when I did just that. And at times I still do. But if some post receives 80 comments, and my son needs to be fed, you can guess which comes first.

This is my feeling. If I give someone a kudos, while it's nice to get an answer back, I don't expect it unless I asked a question. We all have busy lives. If you feel you can comment back, by all means, do so! But to put that pressure on yourself that you MUST to each and every one is in my belief, somewhat self inflicted. It's easy to do in the early days of blogging but gets increasingly difficult as your blog grows.

I suggest:

- respond back if you can. I believe interaction creates bonds that are not soon forgotten. If you can't, at least address ALL the questions.

- Answer questions within your comments (for the benefit of all) AND emailing them back as well. Remember, not all (if any) will actually return to your post a 2nd time to read possible comments from you. I do it for the benefit of new commenters.

- Fire up a Facebook account and ask/answer questions there. It's a breeze (and very fun!) to communicate with all! Join us! FJI Facebook is a chatty and fun group!

Follow FunkyJunkDonna on Twitter

- It pays to check it out and play around on Twitter and see what you think. It's so universal and is similar to a live chat when you land at the same time as others. Loads of opportunity happens there. And you'll get to know your fav bloggers on a more personal level. :)

I'll be creating a post about facebook and twitter at some point too so I can share why I think they're BOTH very important.

ID yourself with your blog url
in emails and comments

What it does:

A blog url is your blog's home page address. If you click on your header, this is your blog's url. Mine reads as http://funkyjunkinteriors.blogspot.com/

Lecture on emails

I get emailed a lot to check out someone's blog. Or a specific post. I just weeded through 70ish emails today so can you imagine how much is on the go when this transpires? :)

Please look into your email settings and at the very least, add an active blog link as an automatic signature so you don't have to do it every time you email someone. This helps to identify you as well as making you easily found! I don't consider it spam. I consider it good blog biz. Maybe I WANT to check you out, ya know? :)

Want me to spec out a specific post? Please include the url for THAT post too. I'd rather help 5 of you than just one of you in the same amount of time. Thanks!

Lecture on blog posts

Got more than one blog? You may even wish to leave your direct URL under your name in your comments to other blogs. I do that at times so one doesn't have to search all my blogs to find the 'real one.'  If you comment on a blog, many times they follow your comment back to you. Make it easy for them!

Homework

I totally suggest to sign out of your blogger account, then go make an attempt to comment on your blog. See for yourself all the hoops that must be taken in order to do so. Then go ahead and tweak to your heart's content. You now know how. :)

And by all means, please share this blog link to whomever you feel could use a little blog savvy help. I thank you in advance! :)

You vs. the computer; who's the boss?

Can you spot what's missing from this picture?

Excuse the bad photo, but it's nighttime and changes happen here 24/7.

Here's the shot you're use to seeing.

If you guessed my computer, you would be right. The Mac is currently residing in my downstairs office short term.

I'm having trouble with the wireless router staying online so I'm fiddling with things downstairs to see if I can improve the issue until my new router arrives.

The picture totally makes me smirk...

What do you think these two are thinking? Or saying to each other? Can two very different worlds AND generations get along?

First thing that came to mind would be them slingin' corny zingers...
:)

What's the result of the computer ALL THE WAY downstairs anyway?

I don't like it.

It's too far away from the action of everyday life.

It's an effort to run downstairs and do stuff on.

I miss my crutch.

Crutch? Yeah. Crutch.

You see, since this thing's been out of sight, out of mind, I've been... doing stuff. Stuff other people without blogs do.

I love escaping online as an excuse to run from stuff I dislike. And I do it far too often.

Case in point.

*I use to be able to keep up to the gardening outdoors. Reality check: I'm light years away from being remotely ready for summer. And it's already summer. Whoops...

*I use to envy those with clean homes and wonder how they do it. But I get it now. They have time to clean. Huh...

Scout's honor... my house has never been cleaner. I come around the corner and BAM.. Clean view + short term memory = where am I?!?

And I like it.

The moral here

Make sure you're living life, then bringing your stories online, rather than the other way around.

If you're sitting in front of your computer stressing that you have nothing to blog about, you aren't living.

If you refuse to open your front door due to the mess to even a burglar, you aren't living.

Life, THEN a story. I think that's what blogging use to be all about, remember?

And you may even get a clean house out of the deal.

Blogging: easy or effort?

 "This is difficult!"

Blogging. It's alot of work, isn't it?

I've read a few posts lately that have some bloggers either taking a hiatus or have quit. It makes me wonder what I'd do with myself if my computer was taken away from me, enforcing me to quit. Quite simply, because I never would on my own. :)

This isn't to say I don't desire a break from time to time. Sometimes there's just too much going on in the real world and I'm overwhelmed trying to keep up with it all. But know what happens the moment there's a lull? You got it... taptaptap. :)

Ever have thoughts of throwing in the towel for any of these reasons?

1. "I don't post very often anyway."

Ever walk into a store with bare shelves?

If you're posting little these days, the outcome is similar. You reap what you sow. Offer relevant content on a consistent basis with good photos, interesting projects, be seen, post often, and you'll see a difference in your traffic.

2. "I just can't be bothered to put in the time."

Blogging takes a ton of time. However if you feel like it takes too much time, perhaps address what you're blogging about. Maybe you haven't hit your own passionate niche yet. Because trust me, when you figure it out, you can't stop chatting about it!

LOVE what you blog about and you'll forget about the time it takes. Your biggest problem will be about breaking away from it. :) See #3.

3. It's all too much! I'm not taking care of life!

If you blog about your passion, time truly does stand still. However there's danger in that too. I have to have a chit chat with myself all the time. "Quit browsing, take care of life, then come back." All the time. Creative friends, you make this hard. :)

Solution? Try setting limitations on blogging such as an hour at a time. Use a timer if you need to.

Tips on juggling with blogging time is HERE.

4. "I'm not making money."

While it's nice to make an income, if that's your sole reason for blogging from the get go, I suggest to pick another hobby. You won't make money right away with a small blog unless you are blogging to promote your business. Concentrate on picking a passion to write about, work on growing your blog, then the rest will follow.

Realize, the most successful bloggers have flipped their blog into their life's work, as opposed those that incorporate blogging into their off topic full time working world.  But there ARE things you can do if you fall into the latter group.

a) Offer something to sell. Whether it be sidebar sponsor space, or selling something, you have to offer something to make a monetary return. Just know, whatever route you choose, it flips into a job. Those with loads of sponsors work hard to advertise for them, and in many cases, work to get them. Those selling things are working long hours making things to sell. Those selling ebooks spend many hours writing offline. Anything you do will take some effort.

b) Join up with an ad campaign.   Some campaigns pay by pageloads, some via clicks on the ads, some both. For me, BlogHer was a wonderful move. Google ads also brings in some monthly income. And there are others out there. Try googling the topic and see what you find.

c) Charge for reviews and giveaways.  Holding a giveaway is promoting someone's business and you CAN charge for the privilege. Trading for product is fine and dandy, but I vote to only trade if you need the stuff. This was about bringing in revenue, remember?

You CAN be paid for your online time. Work on growing your blog first, then jump in!

6. "The competition is difficult to watch and makes me feel inferior."

I remember one blog post in particular. A blogger did a killer before and after that made my jaw drop. And her numbers rose overnight from that one post. What stood out the most is, I couldn't wipe the incredible before and after out of my mind and it highly encouraged me to follow the same path. So, I quit worrying about what others were doing from that day forward and started hacking away on my own potential success.

STOP the comparisons. Go do YOUR best work, then show us. No one does it quite like you, so work on setting up your own stage. Be inspired by what others are offering, then show your visitors what YOU can do.

7." I can't handle watching all that success going on.  I'll NEVER get there."

I'll admit I feel this from time to time. But then I quickly remind myself, whatever success someone else just received has been earned. Then I roll up my sleeves and work a little harder. :)

Watch those successful around you, then try what they have in your own way. They are paving a new way for you. Be gracious, thank them, support them, then go do it yourself! Stomp out the CAN'T attitude and go for it!

8. "I can't get my blog to grow so what's the point?"

How you create your posts can be VERY relevant to your blog's growth. Good pics? Relevant content? Are you teaching something?

Don't worry about big follower numbers or rankings from the getgo. Build up your best content possible, so when others do come your way, they're be enticed to stay. Generally you need to convince a blogger to follow you with more than one good post. Put your best work out there and you've got them!

Post your best work. Post often. Take great pics. Join link parties. Comment lots. You'll be noticed.

And you can also try starting your own link party. However, I do suggest waiting until you have a decent size following, otherwise you just won't get the traffic or return visits. I think I started when I was around 1000 followers.

Visitors are shopping. How are you stocking your store shelves?

You can read tips on how to create blog growing posts HERE.

9. "I don't have enough to say. I keep running out of content."

Perhaps address what it is you're blogging about. If it's home decor and your house is done, and you don't like to change things up, you may have a glitch ahead of you. Think about how you can expand on so you do have content to share, such as creating and selling what you make. Or writing about what you know in order to teach. There are always forks in any given road.

Tips on breaking through writer's block is HERE.

10. I'm not into my niche topic any longer.

That's ok too! Seasons change. Allow your new passions to come forward and see where they take you.

Have more than one passion?  I'm a decorator but I love writing about loads of stuff, from blog tips, photography, lifestyle, inspiration... you've seen it all here. Blog what you love to write about and you will build an audience for it.

"Lah lah lah... new attitude... this is great!

Friends, only you know why you blog. It's my guess that for most of you, this is simply your way of expressing your passion. And if you're loving it, keep at it. Exposure indeed does bring in opportunity. Enjoy the ride and see ya online!
