Covering Lampshades With Fabric

Covering a lampshade or two with fabric is an incredibly easy, fast and inexpensive way to bring a little style into a room. While on a shopping trip to Ikea I selected a yard of the Patricia fabric for $7.99, a fun print in gray and yellow ochre. Perfect for the Big Boy's Bedroom.

First I needed to remove the old fabric which had been added to the shades for Max's previous bedroom.

Below the red striped fabric the shades didn't look so hot, but no worries. I knew the replacement fabric would cover the old glue marks without any problems.

Next two lengths of fabric were cut, measuring the height of the shade between the top and bottom bands and the dimension of the shade plus two inches. The extra length allows for the fabric to overlap with one end turned under to create a clean edge.

Liquid Stitch by Dritz is perfect for the job. I bought my supply at JoAnn Fabrics.

The fabric was now ready to be attached to the shade. A line of glue was applied with the unfinished end of the fabric placed over the glue.

Next glue was applied along the edges of the shade with the fabric pressed into place immediately afterwards. This was repeated until the fabric overlapped and the finished end was glued into place over the start of the fabric.

With just a few minutes of effort I had two "new" lampshades ready to be put back onto the Chalkboard Lamps.

One lamp sits on the desk between the beds, and the other on the dresser. (I'll show those photos in another post.)

Could this lampshade look any better? I not only think it is a hit with the lamp base but love the additional pattern and color in the room.

Tomorrow, more affordable Ikea finds for this Ikea Challenge...additions that are adding big doses of style to Max's bedroom on a budget.
