I finally got to a little project that has been on my to-do list since last fall! How time flies, seriously!
In our house is a growing collection of painted canvases by Isabella and Max, and here is a quick way to add simple frames that provide the finishing touch to these masterpieces!
I began by picking up lengths of maple trim measuring 1 1/2 x 3/4 inches at Home Depot. I still haven't added a decent saw to my arsenal of tools, so a friend was kind enough to help me cut the trim down to the needed lengths with mitered corners. Afterwards the cuts were lightly sanded smooth using fine grit sand paper.
Originally the plan was to stain the wood, but with the art hung on darker walls the frames would have ended up fading away. Excellent, this project just got even easier with the decision to work with the natural wood tone, which looks fresh with the colors in the paintings.
Wood glue made assembling the frames super easy and fast...
...with glue also being applied to the canvas edges.
The frame was held in place with books while it dried, simple, simple, simple! As the canvases are small and light, I didn't think nailing the corners with finishing nails was necessary. Time will tell if I'm right!
Then it was on to repeat the steps for the second canvas.
I like the deep profile of the frames, allowing the canvases to sit back within the frame. They look simple and modern and elevates the art!
And do you notice the layout of the rooms? Family room on the left, master bedroom on the right. Do you see how the TV sits on the same wall as the head of the bed? This drove me crazy when we first moved into the house. I remember one night I went to be early and my husband was watching some sports show. I kept saying, "turn it down, turn it down, I'm trying to sleep!" The next morning he told me he had ended up standing a few inches away from the screen with the volume on one! Poor guy, we ended up adding a second TV upstairs in the bonus room, to avoid this issue from that point on.
